Extended Ha Giang Loop: Ha Giang – Cao Bang – Ba Be

I. Tour introduction

In the middle of Ha Giang’s tourism boom, have you ever wondered whether the wildness, the authenticity and the silence of this grey stone country still exist? The answer is YES — but never on the main roads.
The “Ha Giang Loop” is overloaded. The highways are packed with convoys of Easy Riders nose to tail, and the familiar viewpoints have traded the sound of crickets at night for the noise of commerce. If you are looking for a relaxed trip to take exactly the same photographs that millions of other visitors have already taken, this journey is not for you.
Ha Giang – Cao Bang: Natural and Cultural Heritage is a flat refusal of the crowds. We turn the handlebars away from the beaten track and slip onto the side roads, the trails that hang through old-growth forest and along the remotest stretches of the border. This is an expedition in the true sense, one that sets out to touch the rare, original values still left in the Northeast.
You will not merely ride past the scenery; you will live inside the mysterious air of isolated “three-without” valleys (no electricity, no phone signal, no tourists) such as Sao Ha or Lan Dat. You will test your riding and your nerve as you load the bikes onto rough bamboo rafts to cross the Nho Que River, conquer the 15 stacked hairpins of the Khau Coc Cha pass, and listen to history echo along the surviving sections of the legendary Colonial Route 4 (RC4) through Bao Lac and Thong Nong.
Six days from Ha Giang into Cao Bang, then down to Ba Be (Bac Kan) and Tan Trao (Tuyen Quang) — a privilege reserved for tireless legs, hearts that love freedom and souls that long to find a highland that is still wild, pure and real.

V. Detailed itinerary

Day 1Ha Giang – Lao Xa [100km | 3h]

The journey begins at Ha Giang Experts and heads towards the Thanh Thuy border gate, a place steeped in the pride of this frontier land and in the brave stories of the hilltop battles. On the way back we cross the Lo River and take the road through the Phong Quang special-use forest, where old trees shade a winding lane and give you the cool stillness of wild nature before the first rocky climbs test the riders. Following the border ring road we push deep into the Dong Van karst plateau; the landscape turns the characteristic grey of “cat’s ear” rock as we visit ancient H’Mông villages. At sunset we reach the old hamlet of Lao Xa — a quiet valley of rammed-earth houses under moss-covered yin-yang tiles, where the H’Mông silversmith’s craft has been kept alive for generations. The first night in Lao Xa is the moment for a cup of fiery corn wine by the fire and for feeling the slow rhythm of a village still intact in the heart of the Geopark.

Distance: 100kmRiding time: 3hMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Lao Xa homestay
Day 2Lao Xa – Son Vi – Khau Vai [130km | 4h]

The second day opens with a visit to the old hamlet of Sao Ha, a “valley in the sky” tucked into the Van Chai forest (Dong Van), with its meticulously stacked stone walls and the mysterious air of a community living without electricity or phone signal. Leaving the mist-covered valley, the group calls at the Vừ family mansion in Ha Sung (Lung Tao commune) to admire its distinctive chieftain architecture, before taking a side branch of the Ma Pi Leng pass: the Sam Pun road through Xin Cai to Son Vi, the remotest border road in Meo Vac district. At the end of the day the route follows the lower Nho Que River to Khau Vai, famous for its romantic “love market”, closing a day full of emotion.

Distance: 130kmRiding time: 4hMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Nùng family homestay
Day 3Khau Vai – Pac Bo [120km | 4h]

Early morning in Khau Vai brings a one-of-a-kind experience: loading the bikes onto rough bamboo rafts to cross the Nho Que River, a short passage over still water — and when the raft touches the far bank you have arrived in Cao Bang. The day’s biggest challenge is the Khau Coc Cha pass on Provincial Road 217, with 15 tiers of tight hairpins stacked up a sheer cliff, demanding a steady hand in exchange for the panorama from the top. The route continues over the Na Tenh pass, following the Vietnam–China border and opening onto the terraced valleys of Cao Bang. From Bao Lac the group takes National Road 34 to Thong Nong, then turns onto the Can Yen – Cai Vien – Tong Cot border patrol road towards Pac Bo. The day ends at the Pac Bo historical site, where the Lenin stream and the Coc Bo cave offer a calm, almost sacred space and take you back to the roots of the revolution.

Distance: 120kmRiding time: 4hMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Mé Farmstay
Day 4Pac Bo – Ban Gioc Waterfall [140km | 4h]

The fourth day takes the group from Pac Bo through Tra Linh to Mat Than mountain (Nam Tra) in the Thang Hen lake complex — a geological wonder with a round “window” pierced through the mountain above a valley of green grass. The route continues towards the border, following the jade-green Quay Son River through Ngoc Con and Phong Nam, where giant water wheels and the stone houses of the Tày people create a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

Distance: 140kmRiding time: 4hMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Tày family homestay
Day 5Ban Gioc Waterfall – Ba Be [220km | 6h]

Morning in the Ngoc Con valley, where limestone ranges embrace the Quay Son River. After the awe of Ban Gioc waterfall, the journey turns onto small roads through Tày, Nùng, H’Mông and Dao villages: Provincial Road 206 through Quang Uyen, joining National Road 34 to Nguyen Binh, then through Ngan Son and Phu Thong on Provincial Road 258 down to Cho Ra. We cross the suspension bridges along the Nang River to reach a secluded lakeside retreat in the heart of Ba Be National Park.

Distance: 220kmRiding time: 6hMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Ba Be Retreat
Day 6Ba Be – Hanoi [220km | 6h]

Wake up to the fresh air of the national park and explore Ba Be Lake by boat. Then comes a riding challenge on the forest roads of the Cho Dien – Phja Khao mining area (Cho Don), across the remains of the 1914 Decauville railway and the 1,200 m Otto Pohlig cable line once used to carry ore to the Lo River. History returns at Tan Trao — the “Resistance Capital” (1946–1954) — before the adventure closes in Hanoi.

Distance: 220kmRiding time: 6hMeals: breakfast, lunch

Description

The Ha Giang Loop, ridden east instead of back

The standard Ha Giang Loop takes you round and returns you to where you started. This one does not. From Ha Giang we keep going east — through Cao Bang, down to Ba Be lake, and only then back to Hanoi.

Starts in Ha Giang, finishes in Hanoi. Private groups can ride it the other way round.

Why carry on to Cao Bang

Most riders do Ha Giang in three days and go home. Three days is enough to see the karst plateau, but the trip ends at exactly the point where your hands stop fighting the bike.

The Ha Giang to Cao Bang leg is the emptiest road in northern Vietnam. Narrow, almost no tourist traffic, and the ground changes completely: from the grey limestone teeth of the Dong Van plateau to the green towers and wide valleys of Cao Bang.

Dong Van karst plateau

A UNESCO Global Geopark, nearly 2,400 km² of limestone. This is the part everyone comes for: the Ma Pi Leng pass, the Tu San gorge, the Nho Que river running green a few hundred metres below the road, the Lung Cu flag tower, the Vuong family mansion.

We ride all of it, but we do not linger where the crowds are. The plateau is at its best at seven in the morning and four in the afternoon, not at midday when every rented scooter in the province arrives at Ma Pi Leng at once.

Cao Bang: Ban Gioc falls and Nguom Ngao cave

Ban Gioc is the largest natural waterfall in Southeast Asia and it sits directly on the Chinese border. High water runs June to September; in the dry season there is less of it but the rock terraces show properly.

A few kilometres away is Nguom Ngao, a limestone cave over 2 km long. The passes on the way there are, in our opinion, the most enjoyable riding of the whole trip — good surface, open corners, almost no lorries.

Ba Be lake

The largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam, inside the national park of the same name. This is where the trip slows down: forest roads, a dugout canoe, and a night in a Tay village on the shore before the last run back to Hanoi.

What we tell people before they book

This route is longer than the standard Ha Giang Loop and some days run over 200 km. If you have never ridden several long days back to back, say so — we will re-cut the stages rather than let you grind through them.

We run it all year. September to November is the best of it: the rice is ripe at Hoang Su Phi, the air is dry, the roads are clean. March brings peach and pear blossom. June to August is wet and the surface gets slippery, but Ban Gioc is full.
