Discover the Da River – Tua Chua, 4 Days 3 Nights

I. Tour introduction

DISCOVER THE DA RIVER – TUA CHUA, 4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS
INTO THE FAIRY-TALE COUNTRY
4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS

Dien Bien – Hat La – Ta Cang – Muong Phang – Dien Bien

This is the fairy-tale country of Dien Bien, built around the cultures of the ethnic minority peoples who live in this wild land, wrapped by the Da River — as beautiful as an ink-wash painting, with tall mountain ranges rising on both banks to create a river that is at once majestic, sensuous and deeply lyrical. The Da is not brick-red like the Red River, nor does it carry the “clam-broth green” of the Lo and the Gam. In spring the Da runs emerald; in autumn it flows “heavy and ruddy, like the face of a man flushed with drink”, and it “tints its banks with a wildness as old as prehistory. The riverbank is as innocent as an old fairy tale” — from Nguyen Tuan’s essay on the Da River.

The once-fierce Da has become a lyrical, tender river, like a mountain maiden in the old forests of the Northwest, her grace standing out against earth and sky.

Leave behind the clutter and the pressures of daily life to lose yourself in the nature, the mountains and the people of the Northwest. Note, however, that this is exploratory travel into the wildest corners of the country, with all the difficulties that come with terrain, weather, roads and basic food and lodging — it is not suited to travellers who are only looking for a resort holiday.

IV. Detailed itinerary

Day 1Dien Bien – Hat La [100km]

By the time we land at Dien Bien Phu airport, everything is ready and waiting. Gear up and let’s go!

We explore a village of the Thai, Kho Mu and H’Mông peoples and learn about the migration history of the H’Mông on their way to settling in the Northwest.

Roads as thin as thread along precipitous ridgelines then lead the group to a village of the Xa Phang — one of the smallest ethnic minorities in Vietnam, with a population of around 2,000 people, found only in Dien Bien — where we discover their culture.

Distance: 100kmMeals: lunch, dinnerOvernight: homestay
Day 2Hat La – Ta Cang [150km]

When the rooster calls the dawn, come out to the gate with us and watch a valley of drifting white cloud that looks like a scene from heaven.

Today is a special day: together we explore the wildest part of Dien Bien, riding high-altitude roads into the Tua Chua stone plateau as the Da River gradually appears below. We enter the fairy-tale country of the Northwest, with its magnificent, poetic, raw and powerful landscape of rock and of ancient tea forests — trees several arm-spans wide and tens of metres tall. Perhaps no pen could ever describe the beauty of the paradise unfolding in front of us. Along the way we discover the cultures and customs of different peoples — the Xa Phang, the H’Mông, the Dao…

We will keep the details of today’s route a secret, so that the day can surprise you!

In the afternoon, when we reach the village, we take a boat out and swim in the Da River for about an hour. In the evening we stay overnight in a lovely little hamlet on the riverbank. There is no electricity here yet, but never mind — why worry about that in a place given such beauty by heaven? There is hot water for a shower, warm blankets, soft bedding and an evening of Da River specialities.

Distance: 150kmMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Dao family homestay (on the Da River)
Day 3Ta Cang – Muong Phang [180km]

Today includes 18 km of trail, though it is not too difficult in the dry season. The route takes us through untouched villages down to National Road 6 at Deo Hoa, then onto Road 279 in search of the legendary Pha Din pass — the original one, largely different from today’s new road — after lunch at the top. On the way to Muong Phang the group stops in the Arabica coffee area to see how this distinctive coffee is grown and processed.

At the Muong Phang Homestay you can take part in growing and tending organic vegetables, and pick the produce for dinner yourself. Best of all, relax in a traditional Black Thai herbal bath to wash away the hardships of the road and recover your strength. Tonight the women and villagers come to light a bonfire and share their music with us: gongs and drums, hand in hand in the xoè dance, and the heady scent of rice wine carrying on late into the night.

Distance: 180kmMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinnerOvernight: Muong Phang Homestay
Day 4Muong Phang – Dien Bien Phu [30km]

After breakfast the group sets off to explore the historical remains of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters, set beneath the forest canopy of the Tu Don range, before returning to Dien Bien Phu city in time for the flight.

Distance: 30kmMeals: breakfast, lunch, dinner
