Dien Bien – Muong Phang, 2 Days 1 Night

I. Tour introduction

DIEN BIEN – MUONG PHANG 2 DAYS 1 NIGHT
THE OLD FOREST OF PU DON AND PA KHOANG LAKE
2 DAYS 1 NIGHT
Dien Bien – Muong Phang – Dien Bien (2 days – 1 night)

Muong Phang is where General Vo Nguyen Giap and the command of the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign established their headquarters, in a network of tunnels beneath the forest canopy of the Pu Don range. Around it lie Pa Khoang lake, stretches of old-growth forest and the villages of the Black Thai.

This 2-day, 1-night programme combines a night in a Che Can village homestay — a herbal-bath soak, a bonfire and the dances of the Black Thai of the Northwest — with a morning at the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters and a return along the forest road that crosses the suspension bridges of Pa Khoang lake.

What makes the trip is not the distance — Muong Phang is only about 40 km from Dien Bien Phu — but the depth of the place: the intact Pu Don forest, the command bunker behind the 1954 victory, and the rhythm of a Black Thai village beside a lake sitting at 916 m. It suits travellers who prefer to go slowly, who care more for history and local culture than for conquering mountain passes, and it works for families with young children and for riders with little experience. The season runs from September to March, at its best around the Lunar New Year, when the villages hold their festivals.

II. Tour highlights

  • The first morning belongs to the historic valley: Hill A1, De Castries’ bunker, the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum and the A1 Martyrs’ Cemetery.
  • A night in Che Can, a Black Thai village that still keeps many of its old stilt houses — a herbal bath, a bonfire and dancing with the villagers.
  • The Dien Bien Phu Campaign Headquarters in the old forest of Pu Don — the huts and tunnels from which General Vo Nguyen Giap directed the campaign in 1954.
  • Pa Khoang lake at 916 m with a 2,400-hectare basin; the way back runs through forest, over the suspension bridges spanning the lake’s arms.
  • Only 40 km from the city — well suited to families with young children and to first-time riders.

V. Detailed itinerary

Ngày 1Dien Bien Phu – Che Can (Muong Phang) [40km]

The group collects the bikes in Dien Bien Phu and spends the morning among the relics of the valley — Hill A1, De Castries’ bunker, the Victory Museum and the A1 Martyrs’ Cemetery, the places that made the name of Dien Bien. After lunch we set off for Muong Phang, some 40 km of sealed road curving around the mountainside, the Muong Thanh valley opening out behind us. We stop along the way at Pa Khoang lake — its surface at 916 m, a basin of 2,400 hectares, green water held between forests. In the afternoon we reach Che Can, a Black Thai village that has kept many of its old stilt houses; the group checks into the homestay, rests and soaks in a bath of medicinal leaves. In the evening the women of the village gather for a bonfire and the distinctive dances of the Black Thai of the Northwest.- Meals: lunch, dinner- Overnight: Che Can village homestay

We then follow the forest road back to Dien Bien Phu, crossing the suspension bridges of Pa Khoang lake, stopping at a few viewpoints over the water and calling in at a Thai village along the way. Back in the city the group returns the bikes and rests before heading to the airport. End of the trip.- Meals: breakfast
