A Pa Chai is the westernmost point of Vietnam. The tri-border marker sits at 1,864 m on Khoang La San, in Sin Thau commune, Muong Nhe district — the spot where the Vietnamese, Lao and Chinese borders meet. From Dien Bien Phu it is 250 km of mountain road to the foot of the climb, and that is only day one.
The three days that follow trace the border arc through Dien Bien and Lai Chau, two provinces almost no foreign rider ever reaches. You sleep in a Ha Nhi family's house at A Pa Chai and leave before first light for the marker — roughly three hours there and back. From there the route follows the Nam Ma river through Mu Ca and Pac Ma up to Thu Lum, where the rice terraces are the equal of Mu Cang Chai or Hoang Su Phi and have barely been photographed.
Day three runs along the upper Da river, on the stretch where it crosses from China into Vietnam. We stop at the temple of King Le Thai To in Nam Nhun to see the stone stele carved in 1431, after the king led the campaign against the chieftain Deo Cat Han at Muong Le; it is now a designated national treasure. Then a boat section on the river, the climb over the Xa Tong pass, and a Xa Phang village at 1,300 m — one of the smallest ethnic groups in Vietnam, around 2,000 people. The final morning is spent above the cloud sea at Hat La, in season from October to April, before the ride back to the airport.
This is not a comfort tour. The roads are rough, phone signal comes and goes, and two nights are spent in village homes with no private rooms. What you get instead: villages with no tourism at all, guides who belong to the ethnic groups we visit — Ha Nhi, La Hu, Xa Phang, Cong, Mang, Kho Mu, Lu, Dao, Thai — and a route most Vietnamese have only heard the name of.

Ngày 2Huoi Leng – Ta Phin [90km]
As the rooster heralds the dawn, let’s step outside to witness the enchanting valley filled with floating white clouds, resembling a scene from a fairy tale! Today is a remarkable day; we will embark on an adventure through the untouched landscapes of Dien Bien, where the high-altitude roads lead us into the rocky plateau of Tua Chua, revealing the Da Giang River as it unfolds before us. Enter the magical realm of Northwest Vietnam, adorned with breathtaking mountain and forest vistas, rugged rocks, and ancient tea trees that tower high, large enough for several people to embrace. No words can truly capture the celestial beauty that greets us. We’ll delve into the rich cultures and traditions of various ethnic groups, including the Xa Phang, H’Mong, and Dao.

Ngày 3Ta Phin – Huoi So [80km]
After a hearty breakfast with the family, we’ll continue our journey to explore the villages of ethnic minorities in Tua Chua, where the rocky landscapes mirror those of Dong Van in Ha Giang. We’ll visit the H’Mong village, home to ancient tea trees that are 400-500 years old, towering high enough to embrace. After lunch with the family, we’ll descend the mountain to the Da River. The stunning and poetic scenery of the river is beyond what any words can convey. We’ll make a stop at the Dao Quan Chet villages to immerse ourselves in their way of life. In the afternoon, upon reaching the village, we’ll hop on a boat to explore and swim in the Da River for about an hour. As evening falls, we’ll spend the night in a charming little hamlet by the river. Although there’s no electricity here, it hardly matters. The natural beauty bestowed upon this place is enough to captivate us! We’ll have hot water for bathing, cozy blankets, soft mattresses, and a delightful evening filled with specialties from the Da River.

Ngày 4Huoi So – Si Thau Chai [80km]
In the morning, we’ll hop on a boat for a scenic one-hour ride across the Da River, heading into Lai Chau province. The journey takes us along picturesque roads that wind through charming ethnic minority villages, leading us to Lai Chau. After enjoying lunch in Lai Chau town, we’ll make our way to Si Thau Chai village, a stunning Red Dao ethnic community. Take some time to wander around the village and the surrounding tea hills. If you’re interested, we can also visit a nearby waterfall.

Ngày 5Si Thau Chai – Sapa [60km]
Following breakfast, we’ll set off for Sapa via the national road, tackling the impressive Tram Ton Pass, one of Vietnam’s famous four great passes. We’ll arrive in Sapa around noon, marking the end of our trip.
